4 Essential Articles About Marketing

This week I’m going to focus on marketing and today I have four articles for you. There are many different aspects of marketing and I’m not going to fixate on any particular angle but provide you with a bunch of articles which you can choose which direction you would like to go.

Social Network Marketing: Getting From Zero to Critical Mass
This is a great article from Andrew Chen. In it he talks about building a social network and how difficult it can be. If you are looking to start a social network or a forum or even a newsletter, than this is a must read article.

The Economics of Giving it Away
This article is from the Wall Street Journal and basically talks about why people give things away and why it’s important. Back in the day (which the author describes as anything before September of last year) someone would come up with a great idea, raise money to start it, let as many people use it for free, and then sell it to a bigger company. MySpace fits that model to a T. Read this article if you planning on starting a business online.

Top 10 Social Media Myths Busted
If you are looking to market through social media than read this article about social media myths. Who knew that naked avatar pictures and mass replying on Twitter was a bad thing?

Marketing: Social Media’s Hidden Bubble
Assuming that you have been around social media sites and have been reading blogs, you most likely have heard about social media consultants and experts. Are there really experts in something so new? Anyone can be a consultant for anything and then charge astronomical amounts of their opinions but it’s hard to tell who actually knows what they are talking about. Check out this article and be skeptical before you start forking out the cash to a social media expert.

Using Social Media to Find a Job

Many of us spend a lot of time online whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter, or on our blog. Why not put that time to even a better use. I have a couple of links here that you can use to either find a job using different social media sites or strengthen your resume.

7 Secrets to Getting Your Next Job Using Social Media
This first article is from Mashable. Mashable usually have great articles and these “secrets” that the author gives are more like tips. Regardless, they are helpful and if you aren’t taking advantage of them than you are missing out.

HOW TO: Build the Ultimate Social Media Resume
Another article from Mashable from the same author as the one above. The best tips in the article are the last two: integrate your social network profiles and make your resume shareable. There are quite a few social network aggregator s (which I will post a list of tomorrow) which let you easily integrate them. The author also gives a few examples of social media resumes so you can get a good idea on how to do it.

Using Social Media to Find a Job in a Down Economy
Obviously this isn’t the best economy to find a job but using social media can make it a lot easier. Basically the old adage of “it’s not what you know, but who you know” applies here. So get out there and network!

SEO: Important or Not?

What is SEO? SEO or search engine optimization, is the technique of setting up a website or blog so that search engines (mainly Google) can crawl the site and index the pages easily. But as Rae from Sugarrae explains…

Good core marketing and the occasional yet regular viral success (it doesn’t need to be large scale, especially if your industry isn’t) – both of which amount to driving traffic at the end of the day – can get you good rankings with or without SEO.

Regular marketing and some viral success will get readers to your site but if other people don’t start linking to your site and the search engines don’t crawl your site, than you are basically off the map. Once your site has gotten some traffic it will start showing up in the search engines and you will start ranking higher and higher for certain keywords.

There are so many sites and blogs dedicated to SEO that it’s tough to sit back and say, “okay well I guess it doesn’t work.” One of the biggest things that these SEO blogs stress is ranking high for keywords. The keyword aspect of SEO is so large that there are multiple keyword research tools. Here are a few links to some keyword research tools…

Google AdWords: Keyword Tool
Google’s Search-Based Keyword Tool
Keyword Suggestion Tool

Another big aspect of SEO is building links. If there are a lot of sites that link to pages on your site, the more people will find your site and the better you will rank through the search engines. In fact the last couple of posts (Link Building and Keywords: Two Important Aspects of SEO and 3 Must Read Articles About SEO) deal with almost exclusively link building.

Whether or not you “believe” in search engine optimization or not, taking a little bit of time to use some of the techniques will ultimately help your site in the long run.

Next week, I will be posting links about social media and writing an article on how to build a community on your site.

Link Building and Keywords: Two Important Aspects of SEO

Today I have a couple of articles that help with link building and keywords. Both of which are extremely important to getting your content found. These articles claim to be “comprehensive” and “definitive” in their information and after reading their information, I can understand why. You will definitely want to bookmark both of these articles.

Comprehensive Guide to Keyword Research, Selection & Organization, Part I
This is a great article that goes into an extreme amount of depth in to keywords. It’s rather long-winded and has over 10 other pages in the series. But if you are serious about your website or blog than this article is something you will want to save and check back with multiple times.

The Definitive List (75+) of Link Building Techniques in 2008
There are so many different ways to build links and this article has a ton of them. A lot of these techniques can be found on other lists that help you attract more visitors but this article focuses on building links which helps your site or blog rank higher in search engine results. Not only does this article have a lot of of techniques, but the comments add even more.
